Kalea Villas

We are a European couple, Italian and Spanish, who lived and worked for more than 10 years in a busy Shanghai city. We enjoyed our life very much in a very international and never sleepy city since we started to feel a different need: the urge to slow down, to come back to a simpler life, and reconnect with the surrounding, the sea, and nature. That's when we realized we were ready for a new chapter of our life.

During these years of living in China, we had the chance to travel extensively to the Asian continent, admiring and enjoying the unique beauty of its countries.

During one of our many trips to Indonesia, we finally arrived at Kuta Lombok. And that's when we realized this could be our new base. Since our first days in South Lombok, we fell in love with the beautiful and empty white-sand beaches, its natural environment, and the charm of such a small town as Kuta Lombok.

We thought it was a perfect balance for us, only 30 minutes by plane from the lively and buzzy Bali, but still enough genuine and underdeveloped to maintain its local character.

Kalea is our first project and is like a baby for us: we set up an Indonesian newco, bought the land, and designed and followed the construction with a lot of passion and love.

Unfortunately, we were not very lucky at the beginning of our new adventure as we opened in August 2020, the first summer of Covid19, with no international tourists allowed to enter Indonesia. But with a lot of work and a new understanding of the business model (we started accepting long-term guests), we managed to keep it open until now. In the meanwhile, we had our real baby Sofia, and we feel very blessed to have the opportunity to develop our business and life in such a beautiful place like Lombok.

Sustainability

Kalea Villa complex has been mainly built using locally sourced materials such as; Jogya stones which are used on all our floors, Lombok green stones are used in all our pools and a mix of several locally sourced wood such as Teak, Bangkirai and Wulin.

Wood, Bamboo, Alang Alang grass, Rattan and Macramè cotton are a few of the natural materials we used in our interior design at Kalea villas. Our breakfast is completely Palm oil free as Palm oil is largely responsible for the destruction of the tropical rainforest in Sumatra and Borneo.

At Kalea Villas, we are committed to doing our part in preserving the environment for future generations. We believe in responsible energy consumption in order to reduce our contribution to global environmental issues.

Solar energy does not pollute the air, water or soil. We do our best to minimize the use of plastic throughout the villa complex by choosing alternative materials such as stainless steel, and reusable glass bottles for free drinking water and providing our guests with refilled eco-friendly and natural hair and body care products.

Waste collection is one of the biggest challenges in Indonesia and in Lombok. Kalea villa is a proud supporter of the Lombok Plastic Free organization sponsoring several rubbish bins within the community to minimize garbage and plastic on the streets of Kuta and surrounding rivers.

We have installed an environmentally friendly system of Bio-Septic tanks, which treats all the waste from showers, kitchens and laundry through a bacteria-based treatment process. Naturally occurring anaerobic bacteria work through a system of different oxygenated chambers to recycle all wastewater into clean and reusable water for the irrigation of our tropical gardens.
