Beaches
Enjoy the natural beauty of the Bahias de Huatulco, a series of nine bays stretching sixteen miles along Huatulco’s coastline. It boasts 36 beautiful beaches, the most central bay being Bahia de Santa Cruz. Excursions such as surfing, snorkeling, horseback riding, fishing, and sunset cruises are some of the activities these exceptional beaches have to offer.
Gastronomy
Oaxacan cuisine has been rightfully selected as number one in Mexico during 2018. An exquisite mixture of seafood platters with the most traditional ingredients being the mole, fried grasshoppers and mezcal. Tradition, color, and culture are all passionately integrated, leaving you with a truly authentic experience.
Culture
With 16 different ethnic groups in Oaxaca overall, the cheerfulness of Huatulco can be felt in its colorful streets full of art, music, textiles, and original handicrafts. The area is notorious for intricately woven rugs, tapestries, and bags that have all been carefully handcrafted, giving guests a guaranteed selection of unique items to bring back home.
Jungle
Surrounded by the Sierra Madre Sur, Huatulco hides within a vast and vibrant deciduous jungle that offers endless opportunities for adventure. One of Huatulco’s most notable features is the incredible wildlife found throughout the region, home to more than 900 species of reptiles, birds, mammals, and amphibians.
Villa Escondida and its surrounding community is a special place and we are committed to reducing our footprint on the planet and have several practices in place to minimize our impact.
We are passionate about hiring and buying local whenever possible. Our amazing staff members (Delfino, Rosa, Paulina, and Abi) all grew up here either down the street from the Villa or in the neighboring community of Copalita. Our chef buys produce locally sourced, our furniture in the Villa was made by local woodworkers/artisans, and even our house Mezcal is produced by a local Oaxacan family!
Sustainability
Huatulco was developed by FONATUR with a deep desire to protect its surrounding environment. Some efforts to ensure its sustainable future include reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, reducing waste, improving energy efficiency, and managing natural resources. In 2010 Huatulco received EarthCheck Platinum Certification; it is the only destination in the Americas to achieve this distinction.
Water consumption
Water is a precious resource in Huatulco as we often don’t receive rain for 6+ months! To reduce our water consumption, all rooms have low-flow water fixtures and dual flush toilets. We also change linens and towels every three days or upon request, which helps us to significantly reduce our consumption.
Energy consumption
We have eliminated the use of individual plastic bottles and instead utilize an in-house filtration system to provide filtered water for guests.
Recycling and organic waste
Our staff obtains an additional income thanks to the sale of bottles, cans and other recyclables collected and taken to the local recycling facility.
Organic waste is collected after each meal and repurposed into food for the La Bocana neighborhood chicken farmer.
Energy consumption
Villa Escondida is 100% powered with clean energy from Huatulco’s nearby wind electricity plant La Ventosa. In addition, the Villa has LED bulbs thought and our staff works closely with guests to help them reduce their energy consumption.
No single-use plastic
We have eliminated individual plastic bottles and instead utilize an in-house filtration system to provide filtered water for guests.
Green cleaning
When it comes to cleaning, we consider the total impact on both human health and the environment. We, therefore, utilize Ecolab cleaning products that have a low impact on the environment but never compromise safety or performance. These Ecolab products are also used for the prevention of Covid-19.
