Consistent swells hit Portugal year-round, and with the option to check both the west and south-facing coasts, we will always find a wave ideally suited for your level. The Algarve surf spots were the last to be discovered in Europe and although it doesn’t contain the classic reefs of central Portugal, the potential for good, uncrowded waves is high.
Average wintertime swells on the west coast are around 8-10ft, with 12-15ft maximums, while summer rarely goes flat and regularly gets up to double overhead. The south coast offers perfect shelter with offshore winds and a filtered swell, although it is usually flat in summer. Tides vary from 4-12ft. Visit in Summer for gentler, smaller waves or in Spring and Autumn for more challenging conditions.
You will spend a week surfing long sandy beaches and discovering the beautiful Costa Vicentina in this adventure. Surrounded by the Acacia trees and in the middle of the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, falling asleep has never been this great. Enjoy your own space, where you will be able to start your morning or sip your favorite drink while enjoying the sunset.
Our camping is only a five-minute drive from the famous surf spots of Arrifana and Monte Clérigo - the perfect starting point for our surf explorations.
We founded The Surf Tribe in 2019 to share our passion for surfing and exploring that inspires every single surf trip we organize. We met in 2017 while riding the long right-hand point breaks of Morocco and, inspired by our different experiences, we set on finding a way to share our love for surfing and authentic travel experiences with like-minded people. Two years and a bunch of other surf trips later, The Surf Tribe was born in Switzerland, our current home away from the sea.
Every day we are as stoked to get into the water - no matter the conditions - as any of our guests. What matters to us is to share our love for riding waves and being immersed in nature as opposed to sitting at a desk, and creating long-lasting bonds with like-minded passionate surfers. We believe that the best moments happen when we're following our passions, creating and sharing memorable experiences with open-minded people, in beautiful and authentic places.
Sustainability/responsibility
Our environmental and social impact is always a big concern for us. In the Algarve we operate in the middle of a Natural Reserve (the Parque Natural da Costa Vicentina e Sudoeste Alentejano). Our glamping accommodations are immersed in nature and adhere to strict environmental guidelines: from toilet composting to permaculture, from removable wooden structures to a full-on recycling system. We donate 1% of all our sales to “1% for the Planet” to support nonprofit organizations and try to inspire ocean awareness every day. We strive to leave places better than we found them.
While we do the surf guiding with intermediate and advanced surfers ourselves, we always partner with small local surf schools for the beginners' surf lessons and always bring our guests to discover local restaurants and businesses to positively impact local communities. In the future we would like to partner directly with local nonprofits to raise awareness and educate the surfers that join us on our trips, showing them directly why we have to take care of our playground, the ocean.
