Sustainability/responsibility
As with airlines, cruise ships, dive boats, and most other tourism that burns fossil fuels, we face challenges in this area and are doing our best to minimize impact. We use a tier 4 engine as our main propulsion, the emissions are therefore deemed acceptable even in the western world. Our boat uses a black tank and follows international standards concerning the dumping of waste offshore. We have sufficient room in our holds to keep all trash that we generate on board in the hull until we are port side and able to dispose of it in the best possible way given our area of operation.
The things we have done which the passengers might notice are small but generally appreciated. We give our surfers an MV Addiction water bottle at the start of the charter to be refilled, this helps considerably with a reduction in using one-time-use plastic water bottles. We have also banned the “one-time-use plastic straw” on board.
Living in a foreign country is challenging, the cultural norms here are quite different than the states. Operating in remote areas, where trash collection doesn’t exist and most folks do not even have a proper toilet- we do our best to maintain respect for the land & ocean.
I came to Indonesia in the late ’90s with some buddies for a surf trip. The trip turned into a life-changer. As most stories go, I met a girl...I ended up sitting at an internet cafe in Kuta where I sent an email to quit my job on Oahu (no iPhones back then!). I had been working as a cook in a 5 diamond hotel in Hawaii, I didn’t want to look for work in a hotel in Bali so I got a job as a cook on a charter boat in Mentawais. The life choice had been made.
I worked that first charter boat in 2001 and surfed empty waves, cooking my way from Aceh to Papua. I had to jump around from boat to boat. I still returned for work in Hawaii in the off-season for the first 6 years or so.
I got involved with the Addiction as a relief cook for chef Tony, who is still the cook today! Tony was having his first baby and needed a trip off. I got my license in 2007 and secured a more permanent role on the Addiction.
Now, 20 some years later, I'm still with the same girl. She's my wife now. We have 2 kids and a long history of working in the surf charter industry we are still loving it. Same crew, same boat, same magical islands...
