The Mentawai Islands are renowned worldwide as a surfer’s paradise and the reason is simple: the incredible abundance and variety of waves, unmatched anywhere else on Earth. There are left-handers and right-handers, rippable walls and perfect barrels, easy waves for beginners, challenging waves for experts, and everything in between. This is, without doubt, one of the world’s foremost surfing destinations, with a practically limitless range of waves.
A tropical island, the Mentawai is enjoyable all year long. However, the preferred time to visit is during the drier season (bigger wave season), from March to October, there is occasional rain like the standard tropical weather. Blessed with an average annual temperature of 30°C (86°F), Mentawai has a tropical marine climate, with ocean winds that average out annually to a breezy 3.1 meters per second. The island enjoys relatively mild dry and wet seasons. From November to February, the wet season (with smaller waves). Weather can be a bit unpredictable. Still, on average, you will get mostly sunny days and refreshing nights.
You can surf Mentawai the whole year round. The bigger waves happen between May and September, March/April/October/November. We could say that we have middle-size waves and from December to February, smaller size waves but still fun and totally surfable.
There are more than 13 surfing spots around the island reachable by boat and in the bay, at our beach, there are three breaks.

The owners are Aimar and Karla, a young couple from San Sebastian who decided to create a project that would combine their two passions: traveling and surfing perfect waves. It all started when Aimar and Karla booked a holiday to Indonesia.
Due to some last-minute changes, Karla wasn't able to make it, so Aimar had to go on his own. Once there, Aimar decided to go to a surf camp on the Mentawais for ten days, and he fell in love with the place: virgin islands, crystal clear water, white sand, perfect waves for every level, but also a beautiful paradise for non-surfers and families.
He decided to extend his stay for another 10 days and gather as much information as he could for his new and sudden project. As soon as he came back to Spain, he told Karla all about his plan and they slowly started to build a small resort.
Awera Resort opened its doors 6 years ago, and every year they have made some great changes until it has become one of the most exclusive resorts on the Mentawais: with a private pool and chilling area in every property, menu a la carte, spa, and many more services.
