Tavo Rio’s Santa Teresa

The sun hasn’t yet risen but you’re riding shotgun in a vintage Land Cruiser. Empty, glassy waves peel for miles. Pura Vida.

Why surf Santa Teresa?

Santa Teresa, Costa Rica is a surf town, pure and simple. With world-renowned beach breaks that extend for miles, year-round waves, warm water, and reefs and points sprinkled about, it’s no wonder why people never want to leave. On any given day, the significant tide swings can provide great windows for both beginners as well as more advanced surfers. All in all, it’s a great call.

Tico Style

Born and raised on the Nicoya Peninsula, his earliest memories are of going to the beach with his mom. It didn’t take long for the young beach boy to take an interest in surfing and once he hopped on a board, there was no looking back. Nearly 20 years later and regardless of the equipment he’s riding – whether it’s a log, mid-length, singlefin, twinnie, or thruster – our man Tavo Rio exudes style, grace, and ‘pura vida’ essence on each and every wave. Catch him on land and you’ll see that he navigates the world in the same way he surfs: effortlessly and with a smile.

“Wow it was so cool surfing with Tavo and checking spots around Santa Teresa! He’s an amazing surfer and I’m stoked we are friends!”

Your private adventure

Who’s it for

Santa Teresa is beloved by people from all corners of the world. We stand by our statement that this trip can be enjoyable for all, whether you prefer peace, tranquility, and mellow waves every day, or long nights out and barrels for breakfast.

When to go

November to mid-April is high season, which means a more lively scene in town and more heads in the lineup. The low season coincides with the rainy season and things are quieter, but bigger surf is more common.

Make it yours

With no set itinerary, Tavo’s trips are one-of-a-kind. Let him show you secret waterfalls, lesser-known waves, and community surf events by day and tasty dinners, live music, and house parties by night.

Tavo's Picks

Drop into the Costa Rican rhythm with yoga, waterfall journeys, and jungle hikes bookended by two surf sessions a day.

Where you'll sleep

Stay in hidden homes and boutique hotels matched to your needs—from lux digs with a private chef to bohemian bungalows right on the beach, your spot is guaranteed to be dialed.

Bohemia

Tucked into the hills just above one of the best waves in town is Bohemia. Wake up to the tranquility of bird song, catch a glimpse of the waves from just outside your bungalow, and grab a coffee and fresh fruit to fuel your dawn patrol session. Después-surf, enjoy a healthy Tico-style breakfast before you take a dip in the pool, flow into yoga, or use their fast wifi to catch up on emails. Here, you’ll feel right at home.

Casa Mírame

A short drive up the hill leads you to the private enclave of Casa Mírame. This modern-yet-minimal three-bedroom home features a saltwater pool, yoga shala, BBQ grill, and an open floor plan that makes hosting or lounging post-surf feel like a must. Ocean views throughout the property means you barely have to get out of bed to check the surf. The only real downside here is that you’ll never want to leave.

These are just a few of the special digs available. We need to know a bit about you to match the perfect spot for you and yours.
