Suri Barrera’s La Libertad

The view from La Libertad will make your jaw drop as you watch flawless waves peel off the rocky points.

Why surf El Salvador?

With over 20 amazing waves within this stretch of Salvadorean coastline, it’s no wonder the region has earned the nickname of “Surf City”. From the lengthy, solid walls and barrels of Punta Roca, to the more playful lines at K59 and fun-sized lefts at La Bocana, there’s something for everyone in El Sal. And, although the surf scene is relatively young, many locals in the water are happy to share the stoke with visitors. Yeah, it’s a vibe.

Hija del Mar

Whether she’s charging at Punta Roca or helping young girls learn to surf through her women’s empowerment group, Suri Barrera does it all with a smile and grace. Like an open-faced wave peeling down the point, Suri radiates an energy that draws attention and inspires. And her intimate knowledge of La Libertad means that she knows just when and where to strike on any given day, to avoid the crowds and zeroing in on the best waves.

“Suri made sure our group was having fun and knew people wherever we went. She always knew the best surf spot to go to based on the conditions.”

Your private adventure

Who’s it for

The beauty of surfing La Libertad is that there’s something for everyone. Within a few miles, longboarders can dance across long points, rippers can revel in hollow waves, and casual surfers can take it easy in fun, easy peelers.

When to go

Peak season is from April to October, which is when South swells reach the coast most consistently. November to March is the offseason, with December and January being the smallest months of the year (AKA a great time for beginners).

Make it yours

With no set itinerary, Suri’s adventures are one-of-a-kind. Cruising with her could lead you from story-worthy surf sessions to epic volcano visits, hot springs hikes, skate park sessions, local food tours, and more.

Suri's Picks

Yes, the surf is great but there is much more to explore. From dawn patrol sessions all the way to delicious local dinners.

Where you'll sleep

Stay in hidden homes and boutique hotels matched to your needs—from lux digs with a private chef to bohemian bungalows right on the beach, your spot is guaranteed to be dialed.

Palo Verde

A sustainability-minded boutique hotel perched above the world-class waves of El Zonte, Palo Verde opens your eyes to what’s possible when a hotel shows respect for the environment. Just steps away from a perfect point break, watch the surf from the pool and fuel up for another session with fresh fare from NAN-tal!, the onsite restaurant. You can even take classes from their very own Spanish school between shreds.

Balancé

This beachside gem is a Thermal Staff favorite with clean, beautiful rooms, super fast Wi-Fi, and a stylish, intimate feel. The hammock area looks out on the waves of La Bocana, with many more at your fingertips. Relax in the gorgeous pool, take advantage of the yoga studio’s offerings – including breathwork and surf-specific mobility classes – and top it all off with a nourishing meal from the onsite café.

These are just a few of the special digs available. We need to know a bit about you to match the perfect spot for you and yours.

How well do I need to surf?

With consistent surf year-round, El Salvador is a great destination for all surfers. Surfers just getting started will love the smaller days from November to May. Advanced surfers will enjoy May to October when South swells offer consistent good waves. Be aware that hurricane season in August and September may bring challenging weather and heavy rains.
