Although we can surf all year round, the best time to score is during our winter months - that starts in April, when the mornings cool off and the land breezes begin and the roaring 40s start sending SW swell up our coast.
From June to August, the winds and swell have groomed and filled the and bars, resulting in perfect right-hand peelers. Our "winters" are more like a European summer too. 77F (25º C) days, barely any clouds and crystal clear, warm water. The best time to be on our coast, hands down.
We are a beachfront surf-themed lodge, in the Walters family since 1916 and is over 100 years old. We offer very comfortable bedrooms, garden camping, and new luxury bungalows in a guest house/backpacker vibe, which means that all guests share the common spaces of the main house with other guests.
The property so it has a rustic vibe, intended for guests to spend most of their time outdoors. You can hire the entire house (all rooms and bungalows) privately or for events.
The house is fully self-catering and it can accommodate up to 14 people sleeping in the house. It is also possible to camp in Umzumbe Surf House, which is always an intimate, chill vibe and never too crowded. Camping Trailers are welcome. The Surf House Property sleeps 23 total.
The rooms are serviced daily. Beds are made with white linens and new towels.
There is ample space to hang out around the house: inside the common areas or at the lounge outside, the big yoga deck, patio chairs, hammocks, or lawn.
The beach is a few steps from the back door, just a short stumble and you are on Umzumbe's golden sand open to your very own private section of the beach, which is perfect for fishing, snorkeling, and swimming in the tidal pools.
The kitchen
We have a shared, self-catering, and fully equipped communal kitchen. We do not offer food or beverages of any kind. There are some food shops in town and plenty of storage space in our fridge. There is no freezer for storage, but we do provide ice.
Surf lessons
A private lesson is the fastest and easiest way to learn to surf. The surf lesson will be designed to fit your specific surfing needs and the one-on-one attention will ensure your reach or exceed your goals.
Students taking private lessons are fitted with a wetsuit (if necessary) and board and given one-on-one instruction from one of our professional coaches. Bring a swimsuit and the desire to learn to surf and we'll take care of the rest!
Your coach will work with you to help you get accustomed to the mechanics and timing of the waves, as well as teach you the skills to enjoy riding them. If you have surfed a few times before, this class will help refine your techniques and develop a foundation for more advanced maneuvers. If you've never surfed before, this is your opportunity to experience the rush!

Ali & Rich, owners of SA Surfari, South African Surf Tours, opened up camp at Umzumbe Surf House in 2013. A once run-down, unattended family cottage, Ali and Rich renovated the property into a comfortable camp for their surf tour guests.
They now open their doors to the extended surf community, whether local Durbanites, J'burgs city slickers, international travelers, or anyone keen on a surf lifestyle. They are truly passionate about sharing the stoke of surfing with their guests and sharing the Umzumbe experience with all.
Built in 1916 by the Great Grandfather of Rich Walters, the simple beach house was designed as a get-away cottage for family holidays by the sea. The original building still stands at over 100 years old. Some of the wood furniture was handcrafted in the 1920's by the Walters men while on holiday and still stands strong in the house.
The property has seen generations of fun in the sun, beach holidays, parties and honeymoons. There could be nothing better than to share that with more friends and family for many years to come.
