Why surf Osa Peninsula?

For surf destinations like Costa Rica that are rife with surf tourism, it’s not uncommon to wonder if there are any spots left “off the map”. Thanks to its location within both a National Park and Forest Reserve, the Osa Peninsula is arguably just that: one of the most remote, biodiverse, and undeveloped places on earth. Did we mention it’s also home to one of the world’s longest lefts? Needless to say, this region is unlike any other.

King of the Jungle

Raised in the rainforests of Southern Costa Rica, there are few more versed in the natural world of the Osa Peninsula than Mayköl Espinoza. A self-proclaimed “student of the forest and sea”, one can sense the deep connection he has with his environment. Whether he’s spotting scarlet macaws in the lush canopy or scoring leg-burning lefthanders, his depth of local knowledge connects travelers to the ocean and land in a way unlike any other.

Stay steps away from the beach

El Tumbo De Las Olas is your ultimate Costa Rican surf escape! Located steps from the beach, this spot offers epic ocean views, cozy accommodations, and direct access to pumping waves. Surrounded by lush jungle, it’s perfect for surfers craving adventure, relaxation, and pure tropical vibes.

How well do I need to surf?

This adventure is designed for intermediate and advanced surfers. Guidance is provided, but no formal surf instruction. If you’re looking for formal instruction check out our Surfer Development Program.

How long will we surf each day?

You’ll have 4 full days of surfing. Those will include 2 – 3 session per day. On arrival and departure days you’ll have the option to surf the break right out front if timing allows.

How many surfers will be in the group?

We’ll have a maximum of 6 and a minimum of 2. Come solo or bring friends!

What airport do I fly into?

Travelers should fly into Cobano, it’s an 30 minute drive to the hotel. We recommend booking an international flight into Liberia or San Jose and a domestic flight with Sansa airlines to Cobano (ACO). Airport pick up will be at 4 pm. So plan to have your flight land at least a half hour prior to pick up times. Airport drop off will be by 10 am, so you’ll want your flight to leave after 11 am. If you can’t make the group pick up times please let us know and we will schedule a private taxi for you for an additional fee.

I’m a solo traveler, is it safe?

Yes, Matapalo is a very safe community. The people are amazing and you’re perfectly safe walking around at night visiting the local spot, Martina’s bar.

What equipment do I need to bring?

We’ll have fun boards, longboards and a few short boards available for the group. All fiberglass and in good shape. If you prefer to bring your own board we encourage you to so, just note the board restrictions for domestic flights. We also recommend bringing plenty of sun protection, sun hats, and rash guards are recommended. You won’t need a wetsuit, the waters are warm this time of year.

What’s included?

4 full days of guided surfing, 5 nights at El Tumbo Resort, all meals, boards, photography, 1 yoga class, 1 boat trip to Pavones, group airport transfers and transport to surfing throughout.

What’s not included?

Flights are not included.

Can I book a private session?

Why a group event instead of a private adventure or a surfer development program trip?

Group events are for surfers who like traveling with like-minded travelers from the Thermal community — you can come alone or bring a few friends. Group events are for surfers who don’t require instruction.
