Trip Highlights

From hiking in lush rainforests to exploring the coral reefs, the Dominican Republic has endless offerings beyond the surf.

“Exploring with Allan really made me realize that I was getting to see and experience the things I had imagined, versus being stuck in with a group of tourists and stuck to an itinerary. We scored epic waves!”

—Billy, United States

Why surf Dominican Republic?

Blessed with long stretches of unpopulated coastline, rugged headlands, amazing reefs, and wide-open beach breaks, the diversity and consistency of waves are the Dominican Republic’s chief draw. With abundant opportunities to score with minimal crowds, you can take your pick of something new every day.

Uncle Allan, Wave Hunter

It was a passion for waves that led Allan to leave a career in the US surf industry and drop into a new life in the Caribbean. Now, after nearly 20 years of guiding here, Allan has made himself an integral part of the surfing community, mentoring and shaping boards for the local kids. From bringing guests to the best waves or recommending the best nightlife, he brings a wealth of knowledge to travelers and locals alike.

Stay a short walk to Playa Encuentro

El Encuentro Surf Lodge is located in the Dominican Republic’s north coast between Cabarete and Sosúa, walking distance from five popular breaks: Coco Pipe, Bobo’s Point, La Derecha, La Izquierda and Destroyer. When you’re not surfing take a dip in their salt water pool, complete with poolside service so you never have to leave your sun chair, or grab something to eat in their open air restaurant. Feel good about staying in a boutique hotel whose philosophy is rooted in minimizing negative environmental impact and maximizing guests comfort.

How well do I need to surf?

This guided trip is designed for intermediate surfers who are comfortable surfing independently, as it’s not instructional. May is shoulder season, so you can expect fun, mellow waves around 2–4 feet, with the possibility of occasional larger swells. If you’re looking for lessons, check out our Surfer Development Programs for a more structured learning experience.
